Pope Francis said the United Nations (UN) today “does not have the power to impose itself and stop a war like the Russian invasion of Ukraine”.

The statements were given in an interview with Argentine public news agency Télam. “After WWII there was a lot of hope at the United Nations. No offense, I know there are a lot of good people working but right now, [a ONU] it has no power to impose itself,” said the pope.

According to the Catholic leader, the UN helps “avoid wars” but “has no power to stop a conflict situation like the one we are experiencing in Europe today or what is happening elsewhere in the world”. “No offense, your constitution alone does not give you power,” he added.

Also, according to the Pope, it’s time to rethink the concept of “just war”. “It can be a fair war, you have the right to defend yourself, but today you need to rethink how you use that concept. I have already declared that using and possessing nuclear weapons is immoral. The dialogue that people have, the capacity to be constructive is no,” he said.
