The detached glacier is part of the Marmolada and is located in the mountain range of the Dolomites. The collapse took place near Punta Rocca, on the ascent route of the normal route to reach the summit, as specified.

The collapse generated a flow of ice debris in a front of about three hundred meters and within that stretch there were several “senderists”.

“All the mountain rescue teams in the area have been activated and the first injured have already been recovered”, confirmed Gianpaolo Bottacin, head of the Veneto Region Civil Protection.

The Italian media reported that at this moment 5 helicopters – via Veneto and Trentino – are flying over the area of the collapse.

In addition, several canine units from Trentino went to the place where the natural disaster occurred to find several people who had not yet been rescued: in principle, 10 are missing.

It was also reported that many of the people who were hiking were rescued, but the six people who lost their lives wept. In fact, many of the bodies would have been pulled out of the ice mass.

Among the hypotheses offered by some specialists, it is believed that the gap is due to the temperature peaks that are occurring in that area of Italy: this Saturday the Marmolada temperature record was reached, with about 10 degrees at the top.
