Senior US and Chinese government officials attended a “candid” videoconference dialogue on Tuesday to discuss “serious” global economic challenges, particularly in relation to the supply chain.

The meeting between US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He came as President Joe Biden was considering removing some tariffs on Chinese imports to help curb inflation.

“The two sides agree that it is of great importance to strengthen macro-political communication and coordination between China and the United States, given the serious challenges facing the world economy,” said Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency.

The agency added that “it is in the interests of both countries and the entire world to maintain the stability of the global industry and supply chains.”

According to Xinhua, the video conference took place at the request of the United States and the meeting was considered “constructive”.

In a statement, the U.S. Treasury Department said that Yellen and Liu “discussed macroeconomic and financial developments in the United States and China, global economic prospects amid rising commodity prices and food security issues.”

“Secretary Yellen raised issues of concern, such as the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on the global economy and unfair (Chinese) economic practices,” the memo said.

China refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and was accused of giving Moscow diplomatic protection by criticizing Western sanctions and arms sales to Kiev.

The United States is facing the highest inflation in 40 years, and the government is looking for ways to ease the pressure on prices.

One of the options being considered is to remove some of the trade tariffs imposed on Beijing by the administration of former President Donald Trump.

If the tariffs are not renewed, a decision can be made on the issue when they expire on 6 July.

According to Xinhua, Beijing “expressed its concerns about issues such as the suspension of tariffs and US sanctions against China” during a meeting with Yellen.

A contact between Presidents Biden and Xi Jinping is expected in the coming weeks.
