The death toll has risen to 10 as a part of the Marmolada glacier, one of Italy’s most famous glaciers, collapsed last Sunday (3).
The remains of the 10th victim were removed from the mountain this Thursday (7) and will now go through the identification process. One person is still missing in the glacier zone.
“The balance of this tragedy has already been determined: 11 people are dead and missing,” said Veneto governor Luca Zaia when he arrived in the city of Canazei, where Marmolada is located.
According to him, eight victims were already recognized by their families, and seven remained in hospitals, with seven injured, two of whom were in critical condition.
The land search ended Thursday, but continues with drones equipped with thermal cameras.
The collapse of the Marmolada glacier, the highest mountain in the Dolomites at 3,343 meters, resulted in severe reductions in the snow cover of the glaciers amid one of Italy’s worst droughts in decades.
A scientific study published in mid-June shows that the snow cover on the glacier at the end of May was 714 millimeters, 50% less than the average for the period. In addition, the glacier has lost more than 80% of its volume over the past 80 years, with estimates suggesting it could disappear before 2050.
Both Prime Minister Mario Draghi and President Sergio Mattarella attributed the Marmolada collapse to the climate crisis.
