Uruguayan justice has suspended the Covid vaccine for children under 13

The Uruguayan justice suspended the application of the COVID-19 vaccine for children under 13 after validating an amparo filed by a lawyer against the executive power.

On the second day of hearings, Judge Alejandro Recaey issued the sentence which he calls into question indefinite pause vaccination in this age group and can be challenged within 72 hours by the Ministry of Public Health and the Presidency of the Republic.

According to the ruling, read this Thursday in the Administrative Litigation Court of Uruguay, the suspension of vaccination, which it is not mandatory in the country, it will be “immediate” and until the requirements established by Recarey are met.

Specifically, the judge ordered the MSP and the Uruguayan Presidency to publish “in full” “all purchase contracts” for the vaccines supplied in the country, where it was inoculated with those of the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, of the Anglo-Swedish AstraZeneca and the American Pfizer.

He also asked that a text be prepared to be delivered directly to children under 13 who want to be vaccinated where it is reported “completely and clearly” on the substances contained in each vaccine, on their benefits and risks, as well as on the “already detected” adverse effects.

Recarey, who took the case as an available impartial judge, ruled that once compliance with these provisions was demonstrated in court, “the possibility of “request the resumption, even immediately, of vaccinations”.

The Ministry of Health, for its part, announced it on social media I would respect the measureand that “vaccines for this population will no longer be available until further notice”.

The portfolio, however, clarified that “each of the decisions made regarding the vaccination of the National Plan for the Coronavirus was based on available scientific evidencecovered by eligibility “.

The case arrived in the hands of the Justice this week, after the lawyer Maximiliano Dantone personally filed an appeal for amparo that included the request for suspension, accepted with celebrations and songs like “children don’t touch” by anti-vaccine protesters in the vicinity of the courthouse.

Vaccination is not mandatory in Uruguay, which became the in June 2021 first country in Latin America in the vaccination of children between 12 and 17 years of age, while from January 2022 it has started to vaccinate children between 5 and 11 years of age.
