French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Sunday that cutting off Russian gas completely is “the most likely option” at the moment.

“This means we need to accelerate our energy independence,” said Le Maire, number two in the French government, at an economic forum in Aix-en-Provence.

Europe is looking for alternatives to Russian, such as American liquefied natural gas, after Gazprom company cut supplies through Nord Stream, the largest pipeline to European soil. It also cut off distribution to countries that did not comply with the new payment terms introduced by the Vladimir Putin regime.

With the start of the Russian War in Ukraine and various sanctions imposed by countries on Putin, the scenario began to worsen.

“We are very independent, we do not like to be dependent on others. The first independence must be energy,” added the minister.

“We have to go to war now, about organization, about sobriety, about reducing consumption (…), we have to decide now,” said Le Maire.
