The Pentagon confirmed to AFP that the leader of the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group in Syria was killed in a drone strike by US forces on Tuesday.

Mahir al-Agal was shot while riding a motorcycle in Jindayris, Syria. One of his senior aides was seriously injured, Lieutenant Colonel Dave Eastburn, spokesman for the Department of Defense Central Command, said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a leading source in the region, confirmed that Agal was killed in the drone strike.

The Syrian Civil Defense Force said that one person was killed and another injured in the attack on a motorcycle outside the city of Aleppo, but did not reveal the identities of the victims.

Little information was available about Agal, whom the Observatory named the governor of the Islamic State of the Levant.

The attack comes five months after an American night raid on the northern Syrian city of Atme, which resulted in the death of ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Kurashi.

At the time, US officials said that Quraysh died after detonating a bomb to avoid capture.
