Authorities said India reported its first case of monkeypox after detecting the infection in a 35-year-old man who developed symptoms after traveling to the Middle East.
According to an official statement, the federal government has sent a multidisciplinary team to the southern state of Kerala where the patient is located.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George told reporters on Thursday that the man had arrived in Kerala from the United Arab Emirates and is in stable condition and isolated in a hospital.
The patient’s contacts were isolated and passengers traveling on the plane with the patient were instructed to be alert for possible symptoms.
Monkeypox is an infectious disease caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans, usually through an infected animal. However, in the current epidemic, the main route of spread is between humans.
Since the beginning of May, there has been an acceleration in case detection outside of Central and West Africa, where this disease is endemic. So far, confirmed cases outside of endemic areas have mild symptoms and no deaths have been reported.
