The day after Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s request for his resignation was rejected, most of the parties that form the basis of the government are already organizing to keep the current leader in office.

However, it is noteworthy that the 5 Star Movement (M5S), the party that caused the current crisis by boycotting the government project in the Senate, has not yet made an official statement on the situation. The acronym for Giuseppe Conte has been holding meetings since Thursday afternoon (14).

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio demanded that political abbreviations “show maturity” in the negotiations so as not to stop the country. “Draghi is a man of his word, as we always say, and the moment Conte’s party decides not to cast a secret ballot, there is no longer a political majority,” he told reporters.

Di Maio, who has been one of the leading names of M5S since its establishment, left the abbreviation due to the problems he had with Conte in the past weeks and formed a parliamentary group with other dissidents.

Antonio Tajani, Força Italia’s national coordinator, said in an interview with “SkyTg24” that he hopes Draghi “reconsiders” the decision and agrees to have a majority government without the M5S.

The prime minister has repeatedly reiterated that his government should have as many parties as possible and that it is impossible to continue without populists. However, numerically speaking, it is possible for him to have a majority in parliament and go with the government even without the M5S.

“We are not afraid of the elections. But we are responsible and we will see if it is possible to get Mario Draghi back as head of the Council. [de Ministros], with a different majority, to face the problems of the Italians. Let’s vote if we can’t catch up. But you can’t keep blackmailing, how can you say it’s just one government if you have the M5S – can a new government survive another nine months under blackmail?” He criticized the leader of Silvio Berlusconi’s party.

Ettore Rosato, head of the centrist Italia Viva, which stands for former prime minister Matteo Renzi, also said he was working for a Draghi-bis.

“The government fell because of an incinerator: It seems to me a purely instrumental decision. Conte knows this in March of next year. [data das eleições], no more. He could no longer control the Movement and felt that he did not have the strength to reach March. He decided this in cold blood and to the detriment of all. We will do everything to keep Draghi, because we believe Italy still needs his quality.”

Shortly after the Democratic Party’s decision to refuse to resign, it announced it was working to preserve the current government.

Draghi will go to Parliament next Wednesday (20) at the behest of President Sergio Mattarella and consult with the parties to confirm whether there is a majority. In the session, all abbreviations will need to make their manifestations clearly and unequivocally.

If there is a majority with the M5S, the government follows. If there is a majority without populists, it will be up to Draghi to decide whether to continue.

If no consensus is reached, the issue will return to Mattarella and Mattarella will have two choices: to form a technical government by February or March, the official date of the elections, or to dissolve Parliament and hold a new election – which will take place between the end of the election. early September and early October.
