Vkusno & Totchka, the chain that took over McDonald’s restaurants in Russia, removed french fries from the menu due to Western sanctions against Moscow that made it difficult to import the product and a bad harvest in Russia in 2021. Information from The Guardian newspaper.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 and has since suffered from Western sanctions as well as the departure of key companies from the country. Such is the case with McDonald’s, which ceased operations in March and sold all its restaurants to a local licensee in May.

The first Vkusno & Totchka restaurants opened in Russia on June 12 and sold around 120,000 hamburgers on its opening day. Last week, customers began posting images of menus without french fries.

The group said the potatoes will be making a full return to restaurant menus “by the fall of 2022, at the start of the next harvest.” Autumn in Russia begins in September.

In a statement, vkusno & Tochka “It is now impossible to import from markets that could be temporary potato suppliers,” he says.

In June, Vkusno & Tochka Chief Executive Oleg Paroev told Reuters a “significant percentage” of materials were sourced from abroad.

Despite the problems, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture said last week that the potato harvest will be greater than in 2021. “The new crop is already arriving, which eliminates the possibility of shortages”.
