An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the southern region of the equator on Thursday (14), killing at least one person.
So far, the only victim of the earthquake was a 16-year-old teenager who suffered an electrical discharge from a high-voltage cable that fell to the ground during the quake.
The epicenter of the earthquake was a few kilometers from the town of Simón Bolívar, in the state of Guayas. Ecuadorian media confirmed that the phenomenon was felt in almost the entire region, including parts of northern Peru.
Esteban Hernández, a seismologist at the Geophysics Institute, explained to the newspaper “Expreso” that, despite its size, the earthquake did not cause a large number of deaths or damage “due to the depth of the two epicenters at almost 60 kilometers.”
Authorities in the South American country reported that three homes were damaged, one in the neighboring municipality of Samborondon and two in the state capital, Guayaquil. The buildings of a health center in Guaranda were also shaken by the earthquake.
