WASHINGTON, July 15, 2022 (AFP) – A 25-year-old African-American man, killed by police in June, has been shot 46 times while trying to escape after a traffic violation in a northern US city, according to autopsy results. Friday (15).
The release of video of his death and police response sparked several days of demonstrations in the northern Ohio city of Akron, a population of 190,000.
The Summit County Forensic Institute, of which Akron is a part, today revealed key findings from Jayland Walker’s autopsy.
According to Lisa Kohler of the Office of Medical Examiners, Walker has 46 gunshot wounds and 15 gunshot wounds, some of which were scraped, according to local news outlet Akron Beacon Journal.
26 bullets were found in the body. “We were unable to determine which bullet killed him,” the official said. “I have had several very serious injuries.”
Toxicology analysis found no trace of drugs or alcohol.
According to police, officers tried to arrest Jayland Walker for a traffic violation on June 27, but he threw a gun out of his car window before fleeing on foot.
Police said there were guns and ammunition in the car.
While fleeing, eight police officers opened fire on the 25-year-old boy. They were suspended from their duties pending the end of the investigation.
This event is a reminder of the deaths of other black men in police incidents. These tragedies ignited a great movement against racism and police violence in 2020, especially George Floyd, who died in May 2020 when a white police officer put a knee pressure on his neck in Minneapolis.
