The Turkish presidency announced today that Ukraine and Russia will sign an agreement to allow grain exports via the Black Sea tomorrow.
“The signing ceremony of the grain transportation agreement will be held with the participation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary General António Guterres. [na sexta-feira] With the participation of Ukraine and Russia”, he announced the office of the Turkish presidency.
An estimated 22 million tons of grain were blocked in Ukraine. In addition, pressure is mounting for a solution to empty the silos that store agricultural products in time for the next harvest.
Last week, the two countries met in Turkey for the first time since March, accompanied by the Secretary-General and the UN (United Nations) António Guterres. At the time, a deal was expected to be announced this week.
Guterres said at the time there was “broad agreement” on a UN plan to ship millions of tons of grain blocked in Ukraine because of the war, to world markets, and to allow Russia to send grain and fertilizer as well.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said the war in Ukraine endangered food supplies in many developing countries, increased prices worldwide and could worsen the hunger of up to 181 million people.
