President Jair Bolsonaro reiterated that Brazil announced this Friday that it will not abide by sanctions against Russia and that it will not make any tougher demands against Russia during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last Monday.
“What I’m doing is not what he wanted. NATO is the right place to settle this conflict,” Bolsonaro told reporters during a visit to a gas station in Brasilia.
According to the president, Zelenskiy “blew up” during the speech, but he, Bolsonaro, retained his “statesman position.”
The president has made it clear that he will not abide by sanctions against Russia. Currently, despite the war, the Brazilian government has purchased fertilizers from the country and is negotiating for the purchase of diesel.
“We will not abide by these economic sanctions, we will remain in the balance. Would there be fertilizer in Brazil if I did not maintain the equilibrium position? How would we have food security and more than 1 food security? Are there billions of people in the world?” she asked.
On Monday, Zelenskiy said in a Twitter post that he briefed Bolsonaro on the situation ahead of the country’s war with Russia and urged everyone to participate in imposing sanctions against Moscow.
In an interview with TV Globo on Tuesday, the Ukrainian president criticized Bolsonaro’s position of neutrality in the face of the Russian invasion.
