Journalist Michele Moraconsidered a “political prisoner“of Daniel Ortega’s government, according to the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh), took a drastic decision to be able to see his son, with whom he has not met since he was arrested in June 2021: he has been on hunger strike for more than a month which he promises to support until the request is met.

“Miguel’s desperation has grown to such an extent that he has decided to go on a hunger strike to the last consequences, to continue asking and claiming his right to meet his son Miguelito, who due to that forced removal, is affecting your mental and emotional health”Cenidh reported.

Miguel’s son is a 22 year old who have a motor disability and that he hasn’t seen his father for over a year. In particular, the journalist has been in prison for 13 months and is serving a Sentence to 13 years for the crime of “violation of national integrity”.

Owner of the television channel 100% Noticias, seized by the Government in December 2021, was captured in June 2021, after announcing his interest in running for president in the elections last November, in which Ortega was re-elected without too much competition, given that his opponents were behind bars or in exile.

“The Ortega Murillo regime is engaging in this case a double torture: he executes it against Miguel Mora inside Chipote (a prison of the National Police) and the one that is causing irreversible damage to Miguelito, a disabled child ”, remarked Cenidh.

Furthermore, from that body they warned that “Miguel Mora’s life is in danger“and demanded that” Ortega Murillo’s regime must respond to his wholly legitimate request “.

Far from being an isolated case, it is part of the socio-political crisis Nicaragua has been experiencing since 2018, when a series of attacks by government forces reduced massive anti-government protests.

According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), these clashes between demonstrators and police have resulted in at least 355 deaths, hundreds of thousands of exiles and more than 190 “political prisoners” who have not been released.

They denounce the Nicaraguan government for the arrest of an indigenous Guatemalan journalist

The opposition’s Blue and White National Unity denounced this Monday that the indigenous journalist from Guatemala Irma Alicia Velasquez was arrested in Nicaragua.

“We denounce the detention and expulsion of the Guatemalan journalist and anthropologist Irma Alicia Velásquez Nimatuj upon her arrival in Nicaragua. The regime continues its repressive and authoritarian escalation. It is time for the international community to act more firmly in the face of these abuses “, they announced on their social networks.

For its part, the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (Acnudh) said it had information “on the arrest by the Nicaraguan authorities of the Guatemalan columnist and anthropologist Irma Alicia Velásquez Nimatuj, at the international airport of Managua. “.

According to the OHCHR, “Velásquez was on his way to an academic event. At the time of the events various personal effects would have been stolen and the reasons for the arrest would not have been reported to him ”.
