The country with the highest number of cases in Latin America is Brazil (592 confirmed), followed by Peru (143), Mexico (54), Chile (20) and Argentina (18).

Only five deaths reported from the disease (three in Nigeria and two in the Central African Republic) were in Africa, where monkeypox has been endemic in western and central regions for decades.

The countries where the most cases were reported last week were the USA (772), France (655), Germany (319) and Spain (316).

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared an international emergency, citing rapid contagion and a large number of affected countries (more than 70), despite a committee of 15 experts from the organization overwhelmingly opposed to WHO.

As a result, three international health emergencies are in place: the other two are covid, which has been declared since the end of January 2020, and polio, which has been in effect since 2017 due to serious outbreaks in countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. .
