France will end the Covid-19 health emergency regime and health passport on August 1, according to a bill approved this Tuesday (26), but this will also allow a negative test for tourists in the country. .

Before being approved by the Senate, Health Minister François Braun said the text “approves the end of the health emergency and the exit regime (…) while maintaining the minimum provisions necessary to continue to protect the French.”

Unlike what the government has presented to legislators, the text ends the possibility of resorting to measures such as curfews or mandatory use of masks from 1 August to contain the pandemic.

France is also eliminating the use of the health passport, which allows vaccinated people to enter bars, restaurants or cinemas, which was suspended in March. The exception applies to hospitals, health centers and homes for the elderly.

But lawmakers allow the government to request a negative test for anyone over the age of 12 who wishes to enter France from a country where a dangerous variant has been detected.

Persons wishing to travel to the overseas territories of France may also be required to submit a negative test if hospitals are at risk of saturation under the proposal.

The government will be able to implement these measures for two months until 31 March 2023. If the executive wishes to extend its term, the National Assembly (Lower House) and Senate must give their approval.

Senators and lawmakers the previous day approved that the negative test record be kept until June 30, 2023, and the virus tracking system until January 31, 2023.
