The main opposition outlet in Russia is the subject of two government proceedings, aimed at stopping its print and digital editions.

The Russian press chief has called for the independent newspaper’s broadcasting authorizations to be revoked Novaya Gazette. Your website, like your paper edition, is threatened by this procedure.

The newsroom of the newspaper indicated this Thursday, in its Telegram account, that the Russian public agency Roskomnadzor had filed an application in court to cancel the transmission license of the site www.novayagazeta.ru. This will theoretically prohibit the publication of journalistic content there.

Novaya Gazeta is the main opposition media outlet in Russia. Its site offers free and open access to the archives of the newspaper, renowned for its in-depth investigations into the corruption of Russian elites and serious human rights violations, particularly in Chechnya.

Publication already suspended since the end of March

Roskomnadzor, quoted by the TASS news agency, said on Thursday that it had also requested the revocation of the license to distribute the print edition of Novaya Gazeta, for not having received “editorial statutes” on time.

The newspaper’s spokeswoman, Nadezhda Proussenkova, also quoted by TASS, said that this second request was linked to a bureaucratic procedure dating back to 2006, when the newspaper re-registered with the authorities.

End of March, Novaya Gazeta had decided to suspend its publication, fearing a ban. The authorities accused him of violating the law on organizations and persons designated as “foreign agents”.

In Russia, the media are forced to scrupulously indicate this status as soon as they mention a “foreign agent” entity. On June 30, parliamentarians also approved a law that facilitates the suspension of Russian media that opposes the conflict in Ukraine.

“We did not say goodbye”

The two Rozkomnadzor complaints are now due to be heard in court, on dates yet to be announced. “We are preparing for the hearings, to defend our rights, the newspaper’s editorial staff said on Thursday. We are here and we will stay. We did not say goodbye”.

Last weekend, Russian authorities blocked another website launched by Novaya Gazeta and dedicated to a new review of articles, “Novaya Rasskaz-Gazeta”, published by its editorial team in Russia.
