Train operator Great Anglia said an injured giant tortoise had blocked rail traffic for several hours in eastern England today.

“Due to the presence of animals on the tracks in Harling Road (east), the line has been blocked and trains passing through this station may be canceled or delayed,” Greater Anglia said.

Passenger Diane Akers, who shared a photo of the turtle with its shell open, said on Twitter: “There is a giant tortoise on the line to Norwich. It is alive but injured.”

The tortoise accessed the railway between Cambridge and Norwich in eastern England.

At around 14:30 local time in Greater Anglia, he said traffic will gradually return to normal. “The injured big turtle has been removed and all roads have been reopened.”

The animal “was taken to a specialist team for treatment and we were told it would make a full recovery,” the railway company said.
