China on Wednesday (3) said military exercises planned for near Taiwan were “necessary and legitimate” following the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said the military exercises, which are expected to take place 20 km from the Taiwan coast, are “a necessary and legitimate measure to respond to the serious provocations of some American politicians and Taiwanese independentists.”
Regarding Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, the US is the provocateur, China is the victim. “The joint US-Taiwan provocation came first, China’s fair defense came later,” he said.
Chinese officials have expressed dissatisfaction that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, which China sees as part of its territory, is seen as a threat to the fragile status quo in the strait.
