A volcanic eruption emanating from a crack began this Wednesday afternoon in Iceland, about fifty kilometers from Reykjavik, the island’s Meteorological Institute announced.
According to Embassy of Iceland in Washington, “it is still early to detail the consequences of the explosion”, of the Geldingadalir volcano. However, “the area is not inhabited,” says the embassy.
Another explosion in 2021
The fissure is located about 40 kilometers from Reykjavik, near the site of Mount Fagradalsfjall. In this region, a volcano had resumed its activity in 2021. Starting on March 19, the eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano had lasted more than six months and had become the longest eruption observed in Iceland in the 21st century.
Images of the eruption that began on Wednesday are broadcast live by the local press:
According to the local press, civil protection was informed of the eruption. In recent days, seismic activity has been intense in the region: in the last public count on Monday, more than 10,000 tremors were recorded, our AFP colleagues underline.
