Four Chinese ballistic missiles flew over the island of Taiwan, say Japanese authorities

According to Japan’s Ministry of Defense, ballistic missiles launched by Beijing as part of its military exercises in the Taiwan region have been stranded at sea in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Tensions continue to rise in the Taiwan region. Since the end of Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island and her return to Washington, China has launched major military maneuvers in retaliation and to demonstrate her might. This afternoon, ballistic missiles were fired from the mainland and flew over Taiwan, reports the Reuters news agency.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, five Chinese ballistic missiles fell in Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Four of them flew over the island, according to Tokyo.

Tokyo calls for “immediate cessation” of maneuvers

Japan submitted a claim to China through diplomatic channels. For the ministry, this is the first time Chinese ballistic missiles have entered the Japanese EEZ. Tokyo also calls for an “immediate halt” to Chinese military maneuvers around Taiwan.

According to Chinese state media globaltimes, the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China would have denied the information, saying that China and Japan have not delimited the borders in the maritime areas in question. “So it is not true that China’s area of military operations is within Japan’s EEZ.”
