Six sea zones around Taiwan

China launched the largest military exercises in its history around Taiwan on Thursday, a muscular response to the visit of the leader of the US Congress, Nancy Pelosi, to the island. Nancy Pelosi’s visit is seen by China as a provocation, support for supporters of Taiwan independence and a breach of the US promise not to have official relations with the island.

In response, the Chinese military launched a series of missiles that flew over Taiwan before landing for the first time in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

These military exercises take place in six sea areas around Taiwan, on busy trade routes, and sometimes just 20 kilometers from the Taiwanese coast.
