Kyiv authorities announced that Ukrainian forces had attacked a major bridge in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, which was occupied by Russian troops, early Monday.
“What a beautiful night for the occupiers of the Kherson region. Attacks in the Antonovski bridge area,” said regional deputy Sergei Khlan on Facebook.
Natalia Gumeniuk, spokesperson for the southern command of the Ukrainian army, confirmed the bombings.
“The fire control we developed a few days ago is working. The effects are significant on both the Antonovski and Kakhovski bridges,” he said.
The Antonovski Bridge is strategic for supplying water to the city as it is the only bridge connecting the south bank of the Dnieper River to the rest of the occupied Khersonn region.
On 27 July, Ukrainian bombardment partially destroyed the bridge.
The capital of the region of the same name, Kherson, is located a few kilometers from the war front, where Ukrainian forces have declared a counterattack to retake the territory lost in the first days of the Russian occupation for several weeks.
The region is strategic as it represents the border with the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014. By occupying Kherson, Russia managed to connect the two regions.
The occupying authorities are planning to hold a referendum to annex Kherson and the neighboring Zaporizhzhia region.
