United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has called for the suspension of all “suicide” military operations at nuclear power plants in Ukraine, especially in Zaporizhzhia.

“Any attack on nuclear power plants is suicide. I hope these attacks come to an end and at the same time the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has access to the Zaporizhzhia plant,” Guterres said at a press conference in Tokyo. Japan..

Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, hiding behind a bend in Dnipro, has been the scene of clashes between Russians and Ukrainians since late last week and continues to threaten the city of Zaporizhzhia.

He said he was “very concerned” about the possibility of a “prolonged” conflict on Ukrainian soil, which “caused great suffering and had a very negative impact on the global economy”.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konanshenkov said the activity of the two reactors operating at the Zaporizhzhia facility, which Russian and Ukrainian forces accuse of bombing, has been reduced for safety reasons.

He added that an attack launched by Kyiv last Sunday (7) triggered the facility’s security system, which cut off the electricity supply.

Guterres has repeatedly voiced his concerns about the repercussions of the war in Ukraine, as well as touched on the tensions between China and the United States around Taiwan.

The 73-year-old diplomat described the situation as a “sensitive issue” and asked for more “moderation” from the two countries.
