According to Sky News, Russia said today “there is no basis” for peace talks with Ukraine, following Turkey’s new attempt to mediate dialogue. Negotiations have stalled since the end of March, when delegations from the two countries met in Istanbul.

At the time, Ukraine promised not to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), but demanded security guarantees from international powers and a clear path to join the European Union. Moscow and Kyiv blame the lack of progress.

It is not the first time that Turkey has offered to host a meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, but this possibility has always been rejected by Moscow. Recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan managed to strike a deal to release grain exports from Ukraine via the Black Sea, a route blocked by Russia.

Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky will be able to meet only after the negotiators have done their “homework,” according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

This weekend, the UN nuclear agency called for an immediate end to Russian military actions near the Zaporizhzhia facility and warned that there was “a very real risk of nuclear disaster”. Ukraine said parts of the facility were “severely damaged” by military forces.

Britain’s Ministry of Defense said Russia was using the area to launch attacks and that Ukrainian forces were taking advantage of the “protected state” of the nuclear plant to reduce the risk of night attacks.
