A Gallup poll shows that 58% of Americans want immigrants to the US to increase or the number to remain stable. Meanwhile, seven out of ten people believe the arrival of foreigners is advantageous, but the issue still distinguishes between Democrats and Republicans.
The Gallup poll, conducted from 5 to 26 July, found that the majority of the population saw immigration as a good thing, but it also depended on the party they identified in addition to the age and education level of the person being consulted.
The number of surveys reaches 83% in adults aged 18-34, 76% in the age group 35-54, and 57% in adults aged 55 and over. Lydia Saad, on a Gallup blog, cited the survey, which did not distinguish between legal and irregular immigration, noting that it occupied 80% of graduates, 65% of those who had not completed their education, and 64% of those who did not have a college education.
86% Democrats are almost twice as likely to view immigration as a good thing for the country, 46% Republicans. 75% independents are closer to the Democratic point of view on this issue.
While most Americans view immigration as an advantage, “the border crisis of the past few years has sparked a multilateral debate about how to deal with the high demand from Latin America, and this is likely affecting Americans’ views,” he explained.
The United States is very divided over immigration policy: 27% of Americans say foreign arrivals should increase, 31% prefer to keep it at the current level, and 38% want a decrease, higher than in recent years, but more than 65% low in 1993 and 1995.
Regarding political parties, the division is clear. While the vast majority of Republicans want a decrease, half of Democrats expect an increase in immigration, and independents find themselves somewhere in between.
Republicans’ fewer immigration requests have increased by 21 percentage points since June 2020, when it stood at 48%. This contrasts with a five-point increase, currently 33%, among Independents and a four-point increase among Democrats, up to 17%.
Additionally, the July poll revealed that 15% of Republicans, 3% of independents and less than 1% of Democrats identify irregular immigration as the country’s biggest problem.
