A Ukrainian court sentenced a Russian sergeant to 10 years in prison for shooting at a residential building from an armored vehicle, Ukraine’s security services (SBU) said on Monday.

Sergeant Mikhail Kulikov, who was detained at the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, was found guilty of “violating the laws and practices of war” by a court in Chernihiv in the north of the country.

According to the SBU, it was concluded that the army “crossed the Ukrainian border from Belarus on February 24” and then advanced through this regional capital, which was badly affected by conflict and “bombed settlements”.

“On February 26, at the command of its commander, it opened fire on an 11-story residential building with civilians. Several floors were destroyed,” said the SBU, adding that the tank was intercepted and then Kulikov was detained.

In May, a Ukrainian court sentenced 21-year-old Russian petty officer Vadim Shishimarin to life in prison for the murder of a civilian. The sentence was reduced to 15 years in prison on appeal. He was the first Russian soldier to be tried for war jealousy since the beginning of the occupation.

Also, two soldiers accused of bombing Kharhiv residents on the first day of the war were sentenced to 11 years in prison. Other cases are pending.
