The group of the most industrialized countries of the G7 accused Moscow on Wednesday of “endangering” the Ukrainian region around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant occupied by Russian troops, and demanded the return of the plant to Ukraine.
“We demand that Russia immediately return full control of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant to its rightful sovereign owner, Ukraine,” the G7 wrote in a statement issued by Germany, which holds the presidency. “It is Russia’s continued control of the plant that puts the region at risk,” the group said.

“Ukrainian personnel operating the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant must be able to perform their duties without being threatened or pressured,” the G7 continues to judge. The group of seven also says it is “deeply concerned about the grave threat” the Russian military poses to “the security” of Ukrainian nuclear facilities.
Its troop occupation of Moscow “significantly increases the risk of a nuclear accident or incident” and “endangers the people of Ukraine, neighboring states and the international community,” according to the same source.
Ukraine’s nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia is the subject of mutual accusations between Moscow and Kyiv, which claim that the opposite side bombed nuclear facilities last week, without any independent source being able to confirm this.
