Israeli police and rescue workers said seven people were injured, two seriously, in a gun attack on a bus in central Jerusalem on Sunday.
The security force said, “Police have been informed that there has been an armed attack on a bus near David’s Tomb. Police have cordoned off the area and are looking for an escaped suspect.”
An AFP journalist confirmed a strong police presence at the scene near the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City.
The Israeli counterpart to the Red Cross, Magen David Adom (MDA), said she was responding to reports that a bus had been shot down in Jerusalem.
“After the terrorist attack in the Old City of Jerusalem, there are seven casualties, two of them seriously, all conscious, one woman and six men,” said MDA spokesman Zaki Heller.
“We arrived at the scene quickly. On Ma’ale Hashalom street (…) passers-by called us to help the two 30-year-old men who were injured on the bus. They were unconscious and walking with injuries to their upper bodies,” said an MDA rescuer in a statement released by the entity. .
Last week, the Israeli army conducted a “preemptive operation” against the Islamic Jihad armed movement in the Gaza Strip. The group responded by firing rockets at Israel.
At least 49 Palestinians, including Islamic Jihad fighters and children, were killed in the military tension that ended in an Egyptian-mediated ceasefire last Sunday.
