China announced on Monday more military maneuvers around Taiwan while the president of the island received the members of a new delegation of members of the United States Congress, a another demonstration of support of US lawmakers to the self-governing island, which Beijing claims as part of its territory.
Taiwanese media showed the delegation arriving for a meeting, although details on the meeting were not initially published.
The visit took place less than two weeks later that US House of Representatives chairman Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, prompting several days of threatening military exercises by China, including launch of missiles on the island and in the Taiwan Strait.
China also sent warplanes and military ships across the center line of the strait, which has long been a division between two separate regions in the 1949 civil war.
China views formal contacts between US politicians and the island government as support for their independence from Beijing.
The Chinese defense ministry and the eastern command of its army announced this on Monday new drills in the skies and in the waters around Taiwan, which should have served as a “resolute and solemn deterrent response to US-Taiwan collusion and provocation,” according to the ministry.
The Chinese exercises of the previous two weeks prompted Taiwan to alert its army, although the population received them mainly with an attitude of defiance and apathy.
