French President Emmanuel Macron spoke Tuesday with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. The telephone interview took place “in the morning” and “lasted one hour and 20 minutes”, indicated the French presidency, which will communicate the content of the exchanges later.
The two heads of state discussed various issues, including the situation at the front lines and “Russian nuclear terrorism” at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a tweet.
The plant, the largest in Europe, was seized in early March by Russian troops, at the start of their invasion of Ukraine launched on February 24. Since late July, several attacks, which the two sides blame each other, have targeted the site, raising fears of a nuclear disaster and sparking a UN Security Council meeting last week.
They also discussed “macro-financial assistance to Ukraine and food security challenges” related to the war, writes the Ukrainian president. Volodymyr Zelensky also thanked France for its help and called for “increasing sanctions against Russia.”
