A series of bloody shootings and fires caused by drug cartels in four Mexican states over several days last week spread fear among residents. But at the same time it alerted experts and organizations to the stability of democracy in that country.
The latest attacks left 11 people dead, including a boy and four radio station employees, who were shot dead in the streets of Ciudad Juárez on the border with El Paso, Texas on Thursday.
Faced with a situation that continues to degenerate, the Save Democracy organization has launched a strong appeal to the authorities to implement strict rules to prevent bloodshed from spreading.
“Mexico has been facing a growing spiral of criminal violence for two decades which today reaches unprecedented levels,” the NGO said in a statement. And she added that for a week in that country «there is an atmosphere of true terror caused by the fire of dozens of vehicles and numerous shops and petrol stations, the seizure of elements of the National Guard, the confrontation between members of organized crime and the army at various points and, unfortunately, the loss of human lives.
This scenario, the text says, “is a social tragedy” that “prevents the future development of democracy” in Mexico.

The organization criticizes that “to date there have been no effective government responses to combat and prevent the establishment and growth of transnational criminal networks that have diversified their most serious economic crimes, such as uncontrolled human trafficking, and competing for the capture of vast territories and their constitutional governments ”.
call to action
According to the Save Democracy statement, “acts of terrorism and crimes against humanity” remain in 99% of cases “with total impunity”.
This situation “makes it essential that public sector institutions in Mexico react to mafia blocs and the use of terror as a new weapon of pressure, control and expansion,” he notes.

And he claims that “the excessive use of force and the militarization of public security does not appear to have contributed to the development of Mexican democracy or to good governance. “
“It is time for the three powers of the state, together with all political forces and civil society, to agree on the application of the anti-mafia practices that are embodied in the United Nations Conventions that Mexico has signed and ratified as a sovereign country”, he asks . The statement of the organization.
“Save Democracy asks the highest authorities of the three powers of the State to generate the political consensus necessary to apply these public policies currently absent in that country and thus fight the criminal violence, impunity and lack of transparency that, every day, its population suffers, “he concludes.
