Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance, said on Wednesday that he considered it “urgent” for NATO’s UN nuclear control body to inspect Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant under Russian military control.
“It is urgent to authorize an inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and ensure the withdrawal of all Russian forces from the area,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference in Brussels.
The Russian occupation of the Zaporizhzha power station (in Southern Ukraine) “poses a serious threat to Turkey. [e] increases the risk of nuclear accidents or incidents,” he warned.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, was captured by Russian troops shortly after the start of the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
Since the end of July, the region has been the target of bombings, which Moscow and Kiev jointly attribute.
Ukraine also accuses Russia of using the power plant as a base and arsenal to launch attacks on areas controlled by Kyiv.
