French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday (19) urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to talk about the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which belongs to Ukraine but is under the control of Moscow troops.
The plant, which has six reactors, is Europe’s largest atomic power plant and was the scene of conflict in early August, raising fears of a nuclear disaster worse than Chernobyl.
According to the French Presidency, Putin has agreed to send a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect the Zaporizhzhia plant – party technicians have been trying to visit the facility for months, but are facing obstacles from both Moscow and Kiev.
“Macron once again expressed his concerns about the risks posed by the situation at the Zaporizhzhia facility, supporting the dispatch of a mission of IAEA experts as soon as possible with conditions approved by Ukraine and the United Nations,” the Élysée said in a statement. Palace..
The statement added, “The Russian president expressed his agreement with the displacement of this post. The two presidents will return to discuss this issue in the coming days after a dialogue between the technical teams.”
The Kremlin said Putin told Macron that the alleged Ukrainian bombings in Zaporizhzhia risked triggering a “massive disaster”.
Earlier this week, Russia listed some conditions for allowing IAEA inspection, including the requirement that the mission not pass through Kiev or consider disarming the facility, which Moscow now says is “impossible”.
