Police said on Saturday that Ecuador had seized at least 3.2 tons of cocaine, two tons of which were in a container loaded with bananas to be shipped to Europe.
“The investigative work made it possible to seize more than 2 TON cocaine in a container in #GYE (Guayaquil) for #Europe,” the agency said on its Twitter account.
In another tweet, he reported that at another port in the coastal region of Guayas, whose capital is the city of Guayaquil, “87 cans containing 1 TON, 213 kilos of cocaine were found after inspection in an export banana container”.
Ecuador, located between Colombia and Peru, the world’s largest producers of cocaine, seized 210 tons of drugs annually in 2021, mostly narcotics.
This year’s seizures exceeded 100 tons.
According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (Undoc), Ecuador was the third country with the most cocaine confiscations in 2020, after Colombia and the United States.
Ecuadorian authorities have seized 6.5% of the 1,424 tons confiscated worldwide, according to the organization’s June bulletin.
