In a letter to the government of Jair Bolsonaro, Colombia announced its departure from the Brazilian-led alliance, which supports an internationally ultra-conservative agenda, attacks any violation of abortion, and whose purpose is to revise agreed-upon concepts. on women’s rights. women.

Bogota’s decision, announced in a letter to the Brazilian government on Monday, is the first gesture of rupture between Colombia and Brazil since Gustavo Petro took office.

The ultra-conservative alliance of nearly 30 countries, formed at the initiative of the Donald Trump administration, was led by Brazil after Joe Biden’s victory in the United States. Along with former president Ivan Duque, Colombia was also part of the project.

Today, the bloc has several countries with an authoritarian or populist far-right character. The group, known as the Geneva Consensus, argues that there will be a maneuver in international organizations to include terms such as the right to reproductive and sexual health in programs, creating a vacuum to legitimize abortion.

It was therefore determined in the alliance that governments would reaffirm the rejection of abortion and the defense of the family. Countries that have signed the proposal will emphasize that “abortion should in no case be promoted as a method of family planning” and that “any measure or change within the abortion-related health system may only be determined at the national or local level in accordance with national legislative process”.

The group’s fear is unfounded. In all texts approved by the UN (United Nations) or WHO, these issues are always accompanied by a warning that national law must be followed.

In their letter to break with the Bolsonarismo-led alliance, Colombians affirm that they “recognize, respect and protect women’s sexual and reproductive rights and sexual and reproductive health.” Referring to its domestic laws, Bogota emphasizes that “the right to legal and safe abortion is an integral and indivisible part of women’s sexual and reproductive rights and sexual and reproductive health.”

“Different Family Forms”

Another message from Bogota in the letter went to the heart of the dogmas of the ultra-reactionary movements in Brazil that influenced public policy under Bolsonaro. “The Colombian government respects and takes into account that there are different forms of family in different cultural, social and political systems,” says Metin.

One of the main flags of Bolsonaro’s government has been the “defense of the family”. But critics warn that the only truly supported model is the traditional family model, with the exception of same-sex marriage.

Colombia is not the first country to leave the alliance. In an executive order signed by President Joe Biden, the US government formally abandoned the alliance.

At the time, Biden was insistent on profoundly changing the position of Americans in international organizations, both in relation to the Geneva Accords and in promoting and expanding the rights of LGBTI movements.
