Anti-aircraft sirens sounded again in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on Wednesday, when the country celebrated its 31st independence and also six months after the start of the Russian invasion.
Messages issued by capital administrations and other threatened municipalities urged the public to take shelter in bomb shelters.
In recent days, the Ukrainian government has warned of a possible resurgence of Russian bombings ahead of Independence Day, causing the Kyiv city hall to ban public gatherings until August 25.
A curfew will be imposed until this Thursday (25) morning in Kharkov, the country’s second most populated city.
Zelensky says Ukraine will never give up its freedom
In a video released today, President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that Ukraine will resist the Russian invasion “to the end” and will not make any “concessions or concessions”.
We don’t care what weapons you have, we only care about our land. We will fight to the end for this,” he said. Zelensky also received messages from several European leaders pledging support for the Ukraine cause.
“People are fighting bravely to defend their homes and families and to protect their right to self-determination in their own country,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. “No matter how long it takes, Britain will stand by Ukraine and provide as much military, economic and humanitarian aid as possible,” he said.
French President Emmanuel Macron guaranteed the European Union’s “long-term” support, while Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi pledged to help Ukraine reach “permanent peace and on acceptable terms”.
“Italy stands by its people, the families of the victims, the millions who had to flee. Since the beginning of the conflict, the Italians have hosted thousands of Ukrainians with warmth, love and generosity. We will continue to provide political, financial, military and humanitarian support,” he said.
