The US military said on Wednesday it had responded to rocket fire at it in northeastern Syria, killing “two or three people suspected of being Iranian-backed militants who carried out one of the attacks.”
“US forces responded today to rocket fire at two sites in Syria, destroying three vehicles and equipment used to launch some of the rockets,” US Army Middle Command East (Centcom) said in a statement.
“The United States does not seek to enter into conflict with Iran”
The day before, Washington had announced that it had bombed pro-Iranian militia bases in the east of the country. Iran then denied any link with the armed groups targeted by these air strikes.
“The United States does not seek to enter into conflict with Iran, but we will continue to take whatever steps are necessary to protect and defend our people,” the US military said on Wednesday. The rocket attacks began around 7:20 p.m. local time “on the perimeter” of the US base at Conoco and then at the Green Village base, Centcom said.
One “member of the military” was slightly injured and received treatment before returning to work, and two others suffered “minor injuries,” according to the news release.
US forces used helicopters to respond to the rocket fire “in a proportionate and intentional manner,” Centcom said.
