US Senator Marsha Blackburn (25) arrived in Taiwan late Thursday, becoming the fourth political figure from her country to visit the island this month.
Tensions between China and the United States have reached their highest point in decades after the visit of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi triggered an unprecedented Beijing military showdown around Taiwan in early August.
A US government plane carrying Blackburn, a Republican from the state of Tennessee, landed at Taipei Songshan Airport shortly before midnight.
“I landed in Taiwan to send a message to China: don’t be intimidated,” he tweeted.
China claims this autonomous island with a democratic regime as part of its territory and has committed to take it back by force if necessary one day.
Pelosi was the most senior congressman to visit Taiwan in decades.
A week after his visit, China sent warships and warplanes around the island and conducted the largest military maneuvers of its kind since the mid-1990s.
