Famous and talented saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award this year at the first edition of the Jazz Music Awards, which will be held on October 22 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in the city of Atlanta, USA.
Shorter, 88, burst onto the scene in the late 1950s as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Over the next decade he joined the Miles Davis quintet and later became one of the founders of the legendary fusion group. Meteorological bulletin.
Winner of eleven Grammy Awards, Shorter received the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award (which distributes Grammys) in 2015 and the prestigious Polar Music Prize in 2017.
The most awarded
There will be six other honorary awards at these Jazz Music Awards, as well as eight competing categories.
Famous pianist and composer McCoy Tyner, who passed away in 2020, will receive the Jazz Legend Award. Trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire will receive the Jazz Innovator Award. Singer, composer and teacher Dr. Lenora Helm Hammonds will receive the Jazz Education Award. Avant-garde saxophonist and composer Henry Threadgill will receive the Jazz Composer Award. And veteran musician and teacher James H. Patterson will receive the Jazz Impact Award.
the nominations
The Baylor Project is the most nominated group in the competing categories, with three nominations for their Generations album.
With two nominations are Orrin Evans, Kenny Garrett, Brian Culbertson, Christian McBride and Brandee Younger.
According to Wendy F. Williams, creator and executive producer of the Jazz Music Awards, “We are honored to recognize and present a wide range of innovative and dynamic artists, including our six honorary awards and 33 nominees.”
He added, “We are the first and only awards show to recognize and celebrate jazz on an international platform in the US. By recognizing the work of nominees and awardees, we give thanks to the rich heritage of jazz, which is an integral part of the culture and of American music.
The ceremony includes performances by Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ledisi, Lizz Wright and Jazzmeia Horn. The musical director of the opening will be Terri Lyne Carrington.
