Spanking could bring back this school year in classrooms in a small town in southwestern Missouri, and the district allows corporal punishment to unruly students whose parents accept it.

In Cassville, about 50 miles from Branson City, administrators briefed parents about the new policy at a meeting this week and handed over consent forms for them to sign, according to one parent who attended the meeting.

“At the end of the day, school provides one more tool to discipline a child where they’re just going to play video games, without sending a child home with a suspended sentence,” said Dylan Burns, a 28-year-old local farmer who prefers the option of corporal punishment. .

Corporal punishment was a widely accepted way of maintaining discipline in American schools in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the practice has disappeared in recent years.

In 1977, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporal punishment in schools was constitutional, giving states the right to decide for themselves. Since then, many have banned the app.

But 19 US states still allow it, mostly in the South, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
