An attempt to repair the two countries? This Friday, Boris Johnson tried to catch up with the words of Liz Truss, proposed to succeed him as British Prime Minister, who had evaded a question to find out if Emmanuel Macron was “a friend or an enemy”.
On the sidelines of a trip to a London-area medical center, Boris Johnson called Emmanuel Macron “a very good friend” from the UK.
“Emmanuel Macron is a very good ‘companion’ [pote] of our country, in principle”, assured Boris Johnson, in French. Before continuing in his language: “I think that relations between the United Kingdom and France are very important, they have been very good for a long time.”
A mutual feeling for Emmanuel Macron
On Emmanuel Macron in particular, the British Prime Minister insists that “I had a very good relationship with him.” He even assures that the French president “is a fan of our country.”
This statement contrasts with the very reserved words of Liz Truss. The British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs is campaigning to become the head of the Conservative Party and succeed Boris Johnson, who has announced his resignation. During a meeting on Thursday, he posed the question “Emmanuel Macron, friend or foe?”
“The jury is not done deliberating. […] If I become prime minister, I will judge him by his actions and not by his words,” he replied.
During his trip to Algeria, Emmanuel Macron assured that “the United Kingdom is a friendly, strong and allied nation, whatever its leaders, and sometimes despite its leaders or the small mistakes they may make in the speeches from the podium” .
