Vladimir Kara-Murza, one of the Kremlin’s main opponents still living in Russia, was arrested near his home on Monday (11), according to his lawyer, Vadim Projorov.

The reasons for the detention have not been disclosed so far and authorities have not made any statements, but Kara-Murza has criticized Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine several times recently.

Russia has strengthened its legal arsenal to deal with criticism of the military operation. Publishing information about the military deemed false by the government is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

In addition, the arrests of protesters and the closure of NGOs, independent media and social networks blocked increased.

Kara-Murza, 40, is Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a former journalist close to dissident Boris Nemtsov, who was killed outside the Kremlin in 2015, and an oligarch critical of Vladimir Putin.

His opponent claims he was poisoned twice for his political activities, in 2015 and 2017.

Despite everything, he continued to live in Russia, while many opposition figures went into exile, especially after the poisoning of the Kremlin’s black monster, Alexei Navalny, last year.
