Mexico will propose to the United Nations the formation of a committee of Secretary-General António Guterres, Pope Francis and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mediate a solution to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The proposal was discussed at a meeting last Wednesday (31) between Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the country’s ambassador to the UN, Juan Ramón de la Fuente.
“The initiative is about the creation of a committee that will allow to strengthen mediation and dialogue actions related to the conflict in Ukraine,” the diplomat said, quoted by the newspaper El Economista.
According to de la Fuente, such a commission would be chaired by Guterres and comprised of Prime Minister Modi and Pope Francis, the leader of a great country with good relations with all parties involved.
Also, according to the ambassador, Obrador has decided to take the proposal to the UN by 20 September, when the next session of the General Assembly begins. In August, the president had already proposed a “global five-year ceasefire.”
