A groom and five wedding guests died a day after the ceremony in Enugu, southern Nigeria, and eight were hospitalized.
According to local police, 33-year-old Obinna Dieke and his wife Nebechi were found unconscious with 12 others in their family home the day after their wedding. There was a “foam” around the mouth.
The guests were found by neighbors who were worried that no guests left the house on Saturday (28).
According to the Nigerian newspaper Premium Times, the main suspects of the police are that the group died from food poisoning or from carbon dioxide released by a generator taken inside the house.
“It was raining and the generator was outside. They brought the generator home. I don’t think they realized the risk and slept while drinking,” a community leader told the newspaper.
While an investigation into the deaths was initiated, eight people, including the bride, were treated at the hospital.
