A Cessna private jet mysteriously crashed in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Latvia on Sunday, 04/09. Debris and fuel were found at the scene.

The trajectory of the plane, which will carry four people, began in the south of Spain and headed for Cologne, Germany. Along the way, however, it changed course towards the Baltic Sea and thus began to be pursued by aircraft of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance led by the United States.

According to NATO pilots and Swedish authorities, it was not possible to see anyone in the cockpit of the private plane during the approach.

“Air traffic controllers were unable to communicate with the aircraft’s crew,” the Latvian Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement. Said. According to the agency, the Cessna 551 was registered in Austria, but the owner of the aircraft was in Spain.

According to the website FlightRadar24, which tracks data from flights around the world, the plane took off from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, at 8:56 a.m. (Brazil time) and began losing speed and altitude about five hours later.

The German newspaper Bild claims that the plane’s crew reported pressure problems shortly after takeoff. However, shortly after the plane left Spanish airspace, radio contact was lost.

In addition to jets from NATO countries that followed the plane, rescue teams from Latvia, Sweden and Lithuania were mobilized to the crash site near the city of Ventspils (Latvia).

Lars Antonsson, the leader of the Swedish rescue teams, told AFP news agency that the plane crashed when it ran out of fuel and so far no human remains have been found. “The chances of finding survivors are slim.”

Antonsson also said he had “no explanation” for the incident and “it remains only to speculate”, but that “the people on board would clearly be incapable of it in these conditions (pressure loss)”.

There is no official information about who will be on the plane, but German media reported that the four passengers were pilots and a family (a father, mother and daughter) has yet to be determined.
