Ukrainian forces said they destroyed an ammunition depot and a floating bridge and recaptured several sites in their counterattack to respond to Russian forces in the south of the country.
The Southern Command of the Ukrainian army said on Facebook earlier on Monday that an enemy ammunition depot was destroyed near Tomina Balka, a town west of the city of Kherson.
A floating bridge near the town of Lvove and a Russian army control center southeast of Kherson were also destroyed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the rescue of “two places in the south” and a third in the east, without disclosing names.
Kirilo Timochenko, deputy chief of the presidential staff, said that the Ukrainian flag was hoisted in the town of Visokopillia, in the north of the Kherson region, which is almost completely under Russian control.
According to local media, the city was conquered by Russian troops in mid-March and has been at the forefront of the war since late June.
“The Ukrainian counteroffensive is making verifiable advances in the south and east,” the US-based Institute for War Studies (ISW) said on Sunday.
“Ukrainian forces are advancing along several axes to the west of the Kherson region. And they have secured lands along the Siversky Donets River in the Donetsk region,” the ISW said.
The aim, according to the Southern Command of the Ukrainian army, is to disrupt Russia’s troop management and logistics systems with the help of air strikes and artillery.
