The European Union has signaled its support for the Brazilian judiciary despite questions from President Jair Bolsonaro. The statement was made this Thursday by Veronique Lorenzo, head of the South America Division of the European Union diplomatic service, during a meeting with Brazilian civil society leaders.

From today, meetings of Brazilian organizations in Europe are trying to repeat the same route already laid out with the US Congress a few weeks ago, seeking a compromise on the immediate recognition of the results of the Brazilian elections by foreign governments. .

This time, Brazilians will hold meetings in Brussels, Paris and Geneva to condemn Bolsonaro’s attacks on the electoral system. Widely accepted by Europeans, the delegation consists of organizations such as Article 19, Arns Commission, Washington Brazil Office, Conectas, Plataforma CIPÓ, Ação Educativa, Brazilian Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transvestites, Transsexuals and Intersex, Coalition. Negra Por rights.

“The European Union reaffirms its full support and confidence in Brazilian institutions, including the STF (Federal Supreme Court) and TSE (Supreme Electoral Court),” said the European representative. “We are working closely not only with the Executive, but with all other branches of government and states as well,” he said.

Few European countries did not complain about being summoned by Bolsonaro to a meeting in Brazil last month where the Brazilian president attacked the electoral system and lied about the situation in the country.

Now, during the meeting in Brussels, the Brazilian delegation asked Europeans to publicly demonstrate their confidence in the Brazilian electoral system, as Ignacio Ybañez, the European Union ambassador to Brazil, and the German ambassador to Brazil have already done. The appeal is also for a call against violence.

Another request from the delegation was the immediate public disclosure of the results announced by the Brazilian electoral authority of the international community. During the meetings, the parties pointed out that immediate recognition would eliminate the possibility of risk, such as failure to recognize the result by the defeated candidate. One of the fears is that Brazil, facing an uncertainty about recognition, could witness acts similar to the violence and occupation of the US Capitol.

The European tour aims to increase the international support network for the results of the October elections and the credibility of the electoral process. The group will also expose the risks of progress in the Democratic Rule of Law, supported by Bolsonaro and some of his supporters, as well as the restriction of civil and democratic freedoms.

Discussions include a meeting with José Manuel Fernandes, head of the European Union – Brazil delegation in the European Parliament. The delegation will be at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva next week. “On this occasion, with the participation of diplomatic missions from different countries and UN special rapporteurs, they will condemn political violence, institutional racism, attacks on the electoral system and human rights violations in the Brazilian election context,” the parties said.
