King of the United Kingdom III. Charles is today the Queen. He declared a period of mourning for Elizabeth’s death that began today and will end seven days after her burial, which was scheduled to take place in ten days.

The British government also published a five-page document containing guidelines for this period, including that flags on government buildings should be flown at half-mast. There is no obligation to cancel or postpone sports competitions and disputes, or to close entertainment venues. According to the government, this will be at the discretion of individual organisations.

Shocked by the end of Elizabeth’s reign, King Charles will make his first speech to the British today. He died yesterday at the age of 96 in Scotland after a series of health problems.

At 73, Charles is the oldest monarch to inherit the British throne. “During this time of mourning and change, my family and I will feel the comfort and support of knowing the respect and deep love that the Queen has,” she said in a statement.

According to Buckingham Palace, the monarch has suffered from “periodic mobility issues” since late last year, making less public appearances. Her last appointment was on Tuesday (6), when Liz Truss formalized her appointment as prime minister.

“The death of Her Majesty the Queen is a great shock to the nation and the world,” Truss said outside her Downing Street office. “He was the spirit of the UK and that spirit will remain.”
